An IP address is a set of unique 8-bit numbers assigned to a device that connects to a network. All types of networks depending on assigned IP addresses to dictate where information goes. There are two methods of assigning an IP address to your devices and computers, which are static or dynamic IP address that will be assigned to a device when it connects to the internet.
A Static IP address is an address that does not change. When your device is assigned a Static IP address, the number remains the same until the device is decommissioned or your network architecture changes. As the most important quality of a Static IP is static, it generally is used by servers or other important equipment. With a static IP address, you will have a constant IP address that only you have access to without having to share with anybody else.
As the name suggests, Dynamic IP addresses are subject to change, which means the IP address assigned to the computer are generated every time a new session begins. Hence, there is no consistency in the IP address, which is the opposite of the Static IP address. Due to a Dynamic IP address always changing, it is typically used for computers that will only be logging in temporarily. The emergence of using a Dynamic IP address is because IPV4 does not provide enough Static IP address to go around. For example, a hotel probably has a static IP address, but each individual device within its rooms would have a Dynamic IP address.
Deciding whether to use Static or Dynamic IP Addresses depends on the nature of the connection, as well as the specific situation you are facing. As there is no perfect IP address solution for all the occasions, both Static and Dynamic IP Address has their own advantages and disadvantages.
As a Static IP does not change, it can provide more reliable communication, which Static IPs make it easier to use VoIP for teleconferencing or any other voice and video communications. It also allows a more reliable geo-location service, which the services can match the IP address with its physical location easily.
However, Static IPs are more hackable due to the hackers knowing exactly where your server is on the internet. Additionally, the cost of using Static IPs is usually higher due to the shortage issue. The internet service provider generally charges more for static IP addresses, especially with consumer ISP Plans.
In general, Dynamic IPs are easier to manage and cheaper to deploy than Static IPs. As mentioned above, the key benefit of the Dynamic IPs is unlimited IP addresses, which your devices will be automatically configured with a new dynamic IP as needed within a network. Hence, the cost of using Dynamic IPs is lower as it can be re-used. As the Dynamic IPs always change, it is also more secure than using Static IPs, due to it being harder for a potential attacker to target your networked equipment.
However, the Dynamic IPs do not work well for internet-facing services, such as the website or emails. This is because the DNS does not work well with Dynamic IPs since it is always changing. At the same time, a Dynamic IP address cannot give you accurate geolocation, as it cannot reflect your real-world location.
Static IPs are better for business, especially if the organizations would like to host their own websites and internet services. Oppositely, the Dynamic IPs are more suitable for most consumers because of their lower price, as well as their lower security risk.
